So what is a TEXAS WIENER? . . .
The name “Texas Wiener” was given to distinguish it from other hot dogs -- “Wiener” from the German name for a hot dog and “Texas” from the spicy chili sauce known in those parts. It starts out with an all beef hot dog that is split and grilled then placed on a steamed club roll with onions, mustard and a special (secret) sauce!!
The secret all started in 1923 when a gentleman by the name of Stephanos Mandrohalos (changed to Stephen Miller when he arrived at Ellis Island) migrated from Greece and opened a hot dog restaurant at 2031 S. Broad Street in Philadelphia, which became known as “The Greeks”. He later moved the restaurant to 1426 Snyder Avenue in South Philly where it is still going strong today. In the 1930's Mr. Miller was approached by a large food company on the east coast who wanted to buy his sauce recipe but he refused to sell it. He wouldn't share the recipe with anyone and that's why he called it his “Secret Sauce”. The ingredients are still kept a secret today!
Not only did customers come in for the delicious foods, but they also came in for the entertainment. They’d watch the cook
who, in quick motion, would flip the hot dogs up onto his arm, slap on the toppings and then flip them back down so that the counter person would wrap and serve the dogs! As time went on, different items were added to the menu, like the hot sausage, fish cakes, hamburgers – but the special sauce never lost its appeal, it was added to these items as well to make for a very interesting and mouth-watering taste.
Although times have certainly changed, the excellent taste and special sauce has not, making Texas Wieners a tradition for generations. The tradition is being kept alive today as Texas Wieners offers the perfect combination of great food at affordable prices, and a warm and inviting family atmosphere with a touch of South Philly attitude!
Welcome to the Texas Wiener Family!
